"Sustainability addresses the ongoing capacity of Earth to maintain all life. Sustainable patterns of living meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Actions to improve sustainability are both individual and collective endeavours shared across local and global communities. They necessitate a renewed and balanced approach to the way humans interact with each other and the environment."*
The Benalla Sustainable Future Group has a number of action groups advocating for changes which promote Environmental Sustainability. Click on the links to find out more about the group which interests you.
Advocacy and Media - An informal group of letter writers, advocates and lobbyists and a more formal subcommittee which is working to develop and maintain a website for BSFG and disseminate ideas and resources about sustainability through social media including Twitter and Facebook.
Agriculture and Food - Food sustainability and security is focus of the Benalla Food Cooperative which enables members to buy mainly Australian produced non-perishable foods without packaging. Living in a rural area, land care; agriculture and forestry management; biodiversity; soils; water and farming practices across the spectrum from organic to conventional are also of great interest to BSFG members.
Bicycle Action - There are health, environmental, economic and social benefits of cycling. The Bicycle Action group considers planning networks, improving cyclists’ safety and encouraging cycling participation. The ultimate goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of Benalla and thus finding ways to overcome any barriers that prevent cycling.
Building - This action group considers issues relating to sustainable housing design and retrofitting for energy efficiency.
Education - Developing opportunities to educate others about sustainability is central to BSFG activities, with regular guest speakers, festival events and forums featuring on the BSFG calendar. BSFG members also engage in a diverse range of sustainability related educational activities in the community.
Energy - The main focus of this group is the exploration of renewable energy options for Benalla.
Plastic - This group is particularly concerned about single use plastic products and is working with local businesses and Council to have Benalla become a plastic bag free town.
Sustainable Gardens & Farms - A number of BSFG members have a particular interest in growing sustainable edible gardens, often following Permaculture principles, while others are passionate about sustainable farming and keen to share their passion with others.
