Waste Wise Benalla - Annual Report to BSFG AGM - May 28 2026

WasteWise continues apace with our various projects. For example, this year we reached agreement with the Golf Club to trial collecting bottles and cans from their bar sales to support our mailing recyclables through the Banish program. My thanks to our volunteers who pick these up weekly and take them to Benalla’s CDS.

On the other hand, the Transmutation bread tag collections will cease later this year, due to their closure in Robe SA. However, the good news is that they are opening a new facility in Melbourne (and possibly elsewhere as well) and will be taking all plastics (numbers 1 to 7) which are turned into resins for concrete-style building blocks – this will be very interesting to see.

Our Facebook page with its weekly recycling hint is proving an enormous success in getting the recycling message out there. The number of followers has risen sharply in the last couple of weeks to over 400, with nearly 80,000 views in the last month alone. I want to acknowledge Karen’s work on the Op Shop flyer and map, which is being very well received from the views and comments received. The QR code is another great innovation and is also well received.

Mike and Liz Hillenaar have donated a filing cabinet to Renew Resources, Benalla’s newest Op Shop at EdSpace in Carrier Street. If you didn’t know of this new recycling opportunity, check it out during school times and maybe get a coffee (in the morning!) at their adjacent coffee shop.
We also have been given a filing cabinet from the Golf Club but are yet to find a home for it. The one we originally installed at the Senior Citizens is still going strong, so proof that the concept works.

Finally, Benalla Council is soon introducing CDS diversion baskets for street bins to avoid bin damage and health hazards from people “dumpster diving” to collect eligible cans and bottles for recycling. Waste Wise has been instrumental in supporting and championing this initiative, as acknowledged by Council.

Our region-wide group NEWA continues to flourish with a small but amazingly enthusiastic group of volunteers chasing all manner of issues associated with recycling. Mike and I have been the Benalla representatives for the past year (and will probably continue next year!).

    'Waste Wise Benalla'

A  group which builds upon BSFG's concern about single use plastic waste reflected by the Plastic Wise action group.  Waste Wise Benalla goes further, drawing from a  broader conception of the Circular Economy.
