From Matt Orsagh from Degrowth is the Answer ([email protected])... "Thanks to the folks at the BBC for putting together this excellent documentary on degrowth. It’s only 21 minutes so very accessible, and a great intro to some of the core concepts." "A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and are advocating a bold solution: degrowth. Originating in France, the degrowth movement has spread to places like Japan, the UK and Barcelona, taking root in academia, grassroots organisations and among university students. The movement argues for a 'democratisation of the economy' and for collectively managing key resources, like housing. Critics argue that opposing economic growth is impractical and warn of negative consequences, especially for the most vulnerable.

In 1972 the landmark report ‘The Limits to Growth ’ questioned the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet.A growing movement of academics and activists is now advocating for a bold solution to the existential crises of our time: degrowth. Degrowth argues for a democratisation of the economy and for collectively managing key resources like housing. This short documentary takes a look at the theory – and asks what degrowth might look like in practice.
