At the February General meeting, and in the February Newsletter, John Lloyd made an urgent appeal for members to volunteer to help with the Plastic Bag Action Group. We have been talking about working towards making Benalla a 'plastic bag free town' for a number of years but unfortunately have been unable to make much, if any, progress. We urgently need two or three more people to become part of the action group, promote the idea with the Council and the Business Network and help to develop a plan to have Benalla move towards becoming a plastic bag free town.
While this may sound like a very big challenge, many towns around Australia have already done this, and we can learn from their experiences and adapt one or more of the models that are out there. As well as getting rid of single use plastic bags there has also been discussion about reducing the number of plastic water bottles. Obviously the members of an action group cannot do this on their own but they can develop action plans to seek community support and involve the council and the Business Network.
There is an urgent need for members to volunteer to help BSFG achieve this important objective. There is a committee meeting next Wednesday (16th) and we will be discussing the future of this important action group. Please email or phone John Lloyd if you are able to help with this action group. Tel: 5765 2476 email: [email protected]
