August's news from 'Renewable Energy for Benalla'

29/8/2017

The Renewable Energy for Benalla (REB) Action Group is currently planning a workshop on reducing energy costs for business. REB has been working closely with Benalla Business Network, Catherine Macmillan, Business Development Coordinator for Benalla council, and Sustainability Victoria to plan this workshop.

REB has developed a questionnaire to survey energy use by business that will be distributed through the
Business Network. This will provide some base line data on energy use in the business/industry sector and will help with planning of the workshop.

REB members have started to make some preliminary investigations about a suitable community energy
project.

Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE) Involvement

At the recent EcoCity World Summit in Melbourne, BZE launched the Zero Carbon Communities Guide in which REB features, as do the other two communities BZE is working with, Baw Baw and Nillimbuk. attended the launch as did representatives from the other two communities.

REB has recently received the first draft of a ten year transition strategy to 100% renewable energy. There is much work to be done on this document before it is finalised.

Our next General Meeting will be held on Thursday April 28th at 7.30 pm in the Uniting Church Meeting Room opposite the Coles Car Park, Carrier Street, Benalla.

Our guest Speaker will be Veronica Schilling, General Manager, Development and Environment, for Benalla Rural City. Veronica will speak about the council’s new Environment Strategy which has been developed following a review of the existing 2011-2015 policy statement. She will speak about the matters covered in the Environment Strategy as well as the question of “Where to from here?”

The Guest Speaker at our previous meeting in February was Martina Rienzner, Hume Region Strategic Coordinator for Statewide Engagement for Sustainability Victoria.  Marina spoke about the role of Sustainability Victoria; changes in its role under the current state government; Sustainability Victoria’s role in relation to taking/encouraging action on climate change and the outcomes of the regional climate change forums that were held around Victoria.   Marina has provided a copy of her slide show presentation--click on the image below to open (large file).
